How to Wash and Care for Your Cotton Clothes So They Last Years

The biggest enemy of your clothes is not actually wearing them — it's washing them wrong. A cotton shirt that's washed correctly can last 5–7 years. The same shirt washed on hot cycles, dried on high heat, and ironed carelessly might look exhausted after 18 months.

Here's how to take care of your cotton clothes the right way.

The Golden Rules

1. Cold water, always

Hot water causes cotton fibers to shrink and break down faster. Unless you're washing heavily soiled workwear, cold water does the same job and is kinder to the fabric.

2. Turn garments inside out

This protects the outer surface and the print or texture from friction in the drum. Do it every single time.

3. Use less detergent than you think

More soap does not mean cleaner. Excess detergent leaves residue in the fibers, which makes the fabric stiffer and traps dirt over time. Use about half the recommended amount.

4. Skip fabric softener

Fabric softener feels nice, but it coats cotton fibers with a waxy layer that reduces breathability and moisture absorption over time. Instead, add half a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse. It softens without the coating.

Drying

The heat from a tumble dryer is the fastest way to age your clothes. The drum spins while applying high heat, which is brutal on cotton.

The ideal method: Hang to dry in shade. Not direct sunlight — UV bleaches dark colors and weakens the fibers.

If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while it's still slightly damp. Let it finish air drying.

Ironing

  • Iron on medium heat for cotton
  • Iron inside out for dark colors
  • Let the iron glide with the fabric, don't press hard in one spot

Storing

  • Fold rather than hang for knitwear and heavy cotton
  • Don't squash items tightly — fabric needs to breathe
  • Cedar blocks or sachets prevent moths without the harshness of mothballs

One More Thing

The best care is thoughtful wearing. You don't need to wash after every single wear. Airing a garment outside for a few hours after wearing it removes odour and refreshes the fabric without the stress of a wash cycle.

Our clothes at Dhaago Wears are made from garment-washed cotton that's already been pre-softened. They're built to improve with age if you treat them right.
